KUALA LUMPUR: Looking at chubby, robust and cheeky Liew Xun Rou with her pink cheeks, it must be gratifying to those who had donated to her life-saving operation just six months ago.

A frail baby with a hole in her heart and suffering from hypothyroidism, she could hardly sit up or crawl.

In June last year, Xun Rou touched the hearts of many who came across her plight in the New Straits Times.

Because of her hypothyroidism, she is still on medication.

However, doctors are monitoring her condition and hope that she can be weaned off her medication when she reaches 3.

For her RM28,000 operation, her contractor father Kim Choon had to borrow RM6,000 from his employer.

Her mother, Ng Yew Lan, recalled that Xun Rou was the last of five patients to go under the knife on the day of the operation, but she was the first to regain consciousness 45 minutes later.

"Just three weeks after her operation, she started to put on weight.

"She's almost 3 now and weighs 17kg. It is a strain carrying her. I get backaches after a short while.

"The doctors said her weight needed to be controlled for her own good."

While she was thankful that Xun Rou had recovered tremendously, she wished she could have a day free from the responsibility of having to make sure her daughter took all her medications and at the correct dosages at different intervals.

"I wish I could be mum of a normal baby for just one day."

Ng said she wanted to impress on her daughter that she must be thankful and give back to society what she had received.

"As for myself, I bake goodies and take them to old folks' homes."
